Journey: Home Exchange from Vancouver Island to St. Louis via Seattle
When: Late June
When Planned: The initial home exchange proposal email was sent in early January, swap arranged and airline tickets bought by the end of January.
With our exchange being arranged 5 months ahead of our travel dates, we had a lot of time to prepare. We arranged for our local travel and tourism offices to mail Tom and Debbie brochures, while they did the same for us.
Both families exchanged photos and maps. By planning early, we were able to arrange $99 airline seats out of Seattle at travel times that were convenient.
Our journey began June 18 with an easy ferry boat ride and drive to Seattle. Lots of rest stops on the way and our deluxe hotel ($79) at Sea Tac airport included parking for 7 nights.
Up early on the 19th and off by hotel shuttle to the airport. Wow! There are 4 million people living in Seattle and I think all of them were in line at the airport! As we stood in line we overheard others explaining that 3 cruise ships unloaded passengers, who were now going home. It took 40 minutes in line to get our bags checked in and another hour and ten minutes of waiting in line to get through security. My head ached, feet were swollen... Got to the plane just in time and were whisked off to Salt Lake City then St. Louis. In contrast to Seattle, I think there were about three dozen people in the St. Louis airport.
Arrived at Debbie's and Tom's home. Three stories, build in early 1900's, had a maids and butlers quarters (exchange came without the maid and butler). Even had a library and a wonderful screened porch.
From June 20 to 25 we visited many attractions around St. Louis. Debbie's and Tom's home was within walking distance of Forest Park, home of the 1904 Worlds Fair. We also got to visit with friends at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Trips to the top of the St. Louis Arch, a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River and a venture into Illinois were hi-lites of the trip along with visiting friends, and for our son, visiting the children's museums.
We ate most of our meals at home, thus saving money on lodging and food. We also agreed to look after their cat.
The trip home was uneventful with lots of rest stops. We got home tired, but happy.
Were there any drawbacks to our exchange? We swapped emails, information, homes and even looked after their cat, but we didn't get to meet Tom and Debbie.
Come to think about it, we haven't met our exchange partners from the last four exchanges we arranged.
With our Global Home Exchange listing we received 25 requests for exchanges over a year.
