Throughout both the East and West Kootenay regions winds the majestic Columbia River, with its source in Columbia Lake near the town of Fairmont Hot Springs on the Rockies' western slopes. The river flows north for over 186 miles (300 km) before hooking west and south to begin its long journey - more than 250 miles (400 km) - to the US border. For nearly half this length it widens to form the Upper and Lower Arrow Lakes, vast reservoirs of water that moderate winter temperatures and help retain moisture in the local atmosphere, thus greatly influencing the types of vegetation found there. The river crosses the border just south of Trail and passes through Washington to its mouth at Astoria, Oregon

West Kootenay Region

The West Kootenays region of BC is located in southern British Columbia, along the US border with Washington and Idaho and offers excellent recreational lakes , Kootenay Lake, Slocan Lake,  Upper and Lower Arrow Lakes. West Kootenay communities include   Creston, Crawford Bay, Kaslo, Ainsworth Hot Springs, Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Slocan, New Denver and Nakusp.  

East Kootenay -  Kootenay / Rocky Mountains  

The East Kootenay region of BC is located in south eastern British Columbia, along the US border with Washington and Idaho and bounded by the spectacular Rocky Mountains on the east.  East Kootenay communities include Cranbrook, Kimberely, Fernie, Sparwood, Fairmont Hot Springs, Radium Hotsprings,  Invermere and the Columbia Region including Golden and Kickinghorse Pass.

The East Kootenays are renowned as recreational playgrounds for both summer and winter.  

Kimberley and nearby North Star Mountain attracts more skiers each year, and visitors will be charmed by the "Old Bavaria" feel of the downtown shopping area. There are plenty of cafés and boutiques for urbanites, and hiking, camping and two golf courses for those who prefer the great outdoors.
